Many nations are building up their plastics manufacturing infrastructure, due to both rising domestic demand for plastics-consuming goods and export opportunities to developed nations.  These and other trends are presented in World Plastics Processing Machinery, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm.

Gains in developing nations will be the driving force behind advances in the global market for plastics processing equipment.  China, for example, will account for over 40 percent of all additional global demand through 2015, with growth stimulated by strong increases in plastic manufacturing as industrialization efforts continue and income levels rise.  Other nations in Asia with smaller, less-developed economies, such as India, Vietnam and Thailand, will also record healthy market gains.  In developed areas of the world, most notably the US, Western Europe and Japan, demand will rebound after a period of decline, although sales advances will not be as strong as those in developing nations.

Among major product types, extrusion equipment will post the strongest gains through 2015, benefiting from growth in global construction spending, which will fuel demand for extruded goods like pipe and siding.  Injection molding equipment will remain the largest product segment, accounting for 40 percent of demand in 2015.

The construction market will post the strongest gains through 2015, benefiting from an acceleration in global construction spending.  The consumer/institutional products market will also post solid gains, reflecting rising standards of living.  The packaging market will post respectable gains due to rising manufacturing output and consumer demand for packaged products.  In addition, plastic will continue to gain market share from other materials in applications such as bottles.

In late 2009, orders started to pick up again – albeit from a very low level – and this upswing continued during the whole of 2010 and well into 2011. Looking at new incoming order curves between 2008 and 2011 highlights just how much of a roller coaster ride this has been”, explained Bernhard Merki.

China takes output lead – Japan back again

Rates of growth as regards global output and exports of plastics and rubber machinery were even higher. The increase was mainly attributable to Chinese manufacturers setting the pace in terms of output. Japanese competitors, which had been badly hit in 2009, emerged from the crisis very quickly and in surprisingly good shape. The upswing in Asia’s industry and emerging economies caused EUROMAP’s share in global output and exports to fall back slightly.

Sustainability creates business opportunities

EUROMAP’s newly confirmed Vice-President, Luciano Anceschi, highlighted another aspect which may become a real asset for machinery manufacturers in Europe. “There is a genuine global trend towards more sustainability. Saving energy as well as protecting resources is playing an increasingly important and pivotal role not only in Europe but in all major economic areas across the world. In order to help its industry meet the demands from all parties involved, EUROMAP supports the manufacturers in the member countries with studies and recommendations. Being prepared may just give our industry the edge.”

According to the group, the average age most smokers in the north east start smoking is 15 years old, but some start at just nine years old.

‘Silent salesman’

Fresh believes eye-catching and increasingly innovative packs of cigarettes can act as ‘silent salesmen’.

Plain Packs Protect is supported by Fresh, Action for Smoking and Health (ASH), Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation.

Smoking is still the north east’s biggest killer, claiming the lives of 11 people a day, according to Fresh.

The government is due to launch a three-month public consultation this spring on whether the UK should adopt the plain, standardised packaging of tobacco products to protect children from tobacco promotion.

Fresh director Ailsa Rutter said: “We want people to support the introduction of plain, standardised packaging for tobacco products as a measure to prevent children and vulnerable young people from taking up smoking, and a lifetime of addiction, through an attraction to these brands.”

Cancer Research UK tobacco control manager Robin Hewings told PN: “Tobacco is uniquely dangerous and requires uniquely firm action, which is why TV advertising of cigarettes has been banned since 1965.

“People generally get addicted to tobacco in their teens and if they carry on smoking it will kill half of them.

“We congratulate the government for their commitment to tackling tobacco and look forward to thousands of Cancer Research UK supporters and researchers making their voices heard.

“We expect the tobacco industry and their front groups to run a massive campaign to fight plain packaging – it is the tobacco policy they now fear most.”

Australia

Australia is the first country to introduce plain drab olive green packaging for tobacco products from December 2012. The plain packs will display only the name of the product brand and graphic health warnings.

Four tobacco giants – Phillip Morris, British American Tobacco Australia, Imperial Tobacco Australia and Japan Tobacco International – are challenging the laws in the High Court.

‘Hands off our packs’

The smoker’s lobby group Forest has recently launched a campaign to petition government against the plain packaging of tobacco.

The group has launched a website, Hands Off Our Packs, that gives opponents of plain packaging of tobacco the opportunity to petition the government when it begins a public consultation on plain packaging in the spring.
